Style Notes from ‘The Great Gatsby’

Traditional menswear styles have been trending upwards for some time now, but there is bound to be a more intense interest in dressing up thanks to the upcoming film, The Great Gatsby. We’re still a few weeks away from the flick’s May 10th release, but anticipation for director Baz Luhrmann‘s dynamic reimagining of the F. Scott Fitzgerald literary classic has been building for months. Most of the focus has been devoted to the women’s ensembles, which were a collaboration between the film’s costumer Catherine Martin and superstar designer, Miuccia Prada. But the impeccably crafted fashions of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire) and the rest of the men are hard to ignore. Designed by Martin and manufactured by Brooks Brothers, the two and three-piece suits, sweaters and dress shirts were inspired by images from the company’s archives as well as Fitzgerald’s own Brooks Brothers-heavy real-life wardrobe. (Experienced in the world of TV and film, BB also creates the suits worn by the male characters of “Mad Men”).

The Great Gatsby-look surely is an upscale, dapper one, but you don’t need to hit up BB or have a country club-sized bank account to get a straight-from-film style of your own. Here are some offerings from Shop Big Time that will have you doing the Charleston in no time.
